Remind subscribers what they'll lose before they cancel

Jan 13, 2026

Two experiments that show how the right nudge at the moment someone is about to leave can change their mind — and your revenue.

  • WHO: Digital & CRO teams
  • INDUSTRY: Media & Entertainment
  • IMPACTED PAGES: Retention page, subscription page

Experiment 1: Optimizing the subscription paywall

Hypothesis: If we reduce the number of free articles before requiring a subscription, subscription revenue will increase because users will convert earlier without significantly harming ad revenue.

Results:

  • +37% Subscription Revenue
  • +20% Overall Revenue Growth

Takeaways:

  1. Testing 5, 7, and 10 free article limits showed different revenue trade-offs between ads and subscriptions.
  2. The 5-article limit drove +49% subscription revenue but hurt ad revenue, leading to only +15% net lift.
  3. The 7-article limit balanced both streams, with +37% subscription revenue and only -6% ad revenue, producing+20% overall revenue growth.

Experiment 2: Surfacing household impact and bundle offers at the cancellation step

Hypothesis: If we surface reminders of household impact and offer bundled discounts at the cancellation step, then more users will choose to stay subscribed because they feel both social responsibility and added value.

Results:

  • +22% Retention boost
  • +43% Higher effectiveness for accounts with 3+ profiles

Takeaways:

  1. Displaying profiles that would lose access boosted retention by +22%, showing that social nudges reduce cancellations in shared accounts.
  2. A discounted bundle offer increased reversals at cancellation, proving that added value at exit drives retention.
  3. For accounts with 3+ profiles, combining social impact and bundle offers was +43% more effective, demonstrating that retention tactics scale with household size.

Clicking cancel is an opening

Someone at the cancellation page is re-evaluating, and that is a window.

The Personalization Ideation Agent builds retention experiences that respond to what a subscriber actually values, and the Experiment Summary Agent surfaces what worked so you can act before the next wave reaches the same page.

By the time that insight arrives too late, the subscriber is already gone. See what a program looks like where it does not.
